This week, one of my students had their best lesson ever from a clear “results” perspective. After years of encouragement and steady support, everything clicked. They sat at the piano, opened their new piece of music, and played the first page beautifully. Even more powerful, they did it while reading the notes with confidence, something that had always been a challenge.
The look on their face said it all. Pride. Joy. A sense of “I can do this!.” I knew it was a moment that would stay with me forever.
For me, there were two reasons it mattered so much. First, because of their immense personal progress. Second, because this student reminds me of myself at their age. Back then, my learning style was not supported, and it took me years to find my way. That’s why we do things differently at Presto.
How students progress faster at Presto
Moments like this do not happen by chance. They are the result of carefully designed lesson systems that make learning music both effective and enjoyable.
At Presto, every lesson is built around two key principles:
- Support the student’s strengths. Whether a student learns best by hearing, seeing, or doing, we use that strength as the bridge into music.
- Strengthen their weaknesses. Once students feel supported, we build confidence in the areas that challenge them, step by step.
This balance is what transforms lessons into lasting progress.
Learning how to learn: metacognition
One of the most powerful tools we use at Presto is metacognition. Put simply, this means ‘learning how to learn’. Students are not only shown what to practise, but also how to think about their practice.
For example, they learn to ask:
- What do I understand already?
- What feels difficult right now?
- What strategies can I use to solve that problem?
This kind of self-reflection makes practice at home more effective and progress more consistent. It turns students into independent learners who know how to move forward with confidence.
The DLI approach
Over the years, we developed our own teaching system called DLI (Dynamic Learning Integration). It was designed to help students connect their strengths with the skills they most need to develop. The results have been remarkable. Students make progress more quickly, and the learning sticks.
So effective, in fact, that Alfred Music, one of the world’s leading music publishers, has secured DLI in a multi-book global publishing deal. This recognition proves what we see in our classrooms every week: students thriving through a system built around them.
Why this matters for your child
Every child deserves the chance to shine in music. With the right systems, support, and practice approaches, progress is not only possible but inevitable. Music becomes a source of joy, confidence, and achievement that flows into every part of their life.
